Case Study: Arizona State University “Grand Hall” Reconfiguration
The Challenge: Transform the hall into a multi-purpose space that:
A) allows students and faculty to meet in a colosseum-style seating environment, informal and casual, maybe with pillows to sit on, and
B) easily transforms into a formal auditorium, with comfortable individual seating for lectures and special events.
Question: How do we accomplish the transformation from casual to formal?
Performance Solutions, in collaboration with Richard Smerdon and the Theatre Consultants Group, created what we refer to as the Stow and Stay seating system. Simply put, with a push of a button, the seats, which are PLC controlled and mounted on moving frames, retract into the “steps” of the space, disappearing quietly, efficiently, and protecting the seats from damage.
Stow and Stay seating allowed our client the ability to transform a room from a casual lounging area to a formal presentation space. The system also allowed the university to mix and match the type of seating required for any specific event. For example, they may retract a row of seats to improve accessibility. Additionally, the appropriate number of seats can be deployed to suit the audience size for a more intimate experience.
